Books drive revolutions, shape societies and mould culture. But how books achieve this is a convoluted story. This lecture systematically examines the question of how books structure societies and how societies shape books. It does this by analysing psychological, social science and historical phenomena and findings on this connection between books and society. The focus of the lecture is on our current society and the connections between social structure, lifestyle and books. Who reads what in our society, who does not read and why not, who reads a lot and which music and which art is highly valued alongside books? What new forms of communitisation and socialisation can be observed? The lecture will provide an overview of the latest developments in the world of books, focussing on manga as well as New Adult, AI and scientific journals.Dates
