Project PARENTS

Sexual Differentiation and De-Differentiation
of Prenatal Parenthood

In this project, we will be considering gender differentiation and de-differentiation in the area of private life during the pregnancy phase in the cases of traditional and post-gender couples, homosexual couples, and 'pregnant men' among others. The difference in gender, on the one hand, is ensured through a biological framework, but at the same time it is subject to a 'love individualism', which (in a way similar to that of the 'performance individualism' pertaining in schools) prevents its uninterrupted functioning in private life. The project brings into focus the conflict between the programmed gender differentiation of parenthood and the scope for a gender-indifferent partnership between parents. Under what conditions do couples accept or reject 'doing gender' and 'doing parenting'?
