Detection and visualization of key structures in complex meteorological flows

Important problems in meteorology sensitively depend on the detailed structures of the flow field, and progress is often prevented by the lack of suitable diagnostic methods to detect and visualize these flow features. The current project focuses on two topics: the formation of tropical cyclones and the formation of orographic clouds. We aim to combine the expertise from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics and the Institute of Computer Science in order to make progress towards addressing important issues. Regarding tropical cyclones, new methods will be developed in order to depict mixing barriers in an objective manner; regarding orographic clouds, new methods will help to better understand the shape of the lee vortex and its relation to the environmental flow.
