How to get to the Institute of Physics
By plane: Frankfurt/Main airport (FRA) is some 30 km from here, Frankfurt-Hahn airport (HHN) in the Hunsrück region is around 90 kilometers away.
Frankfurt (FRA) is the airport nearest to Mainz. From the airport you can take the frequent local train service (S-Bahn) S8 [not S9] with final destination Wiesbaden (takes approx. 30 minutes) or the Intercity/Eurocity train (20 minutes). Please get off the train at Mainz-Hauptbahnhof (Hbf).
From Frankfurt-Hahn airport (HHN) to Mainz Hbf there is a bus shuttle (70 minutes) only. Before reaching Mainz Hbf, this bus shuttle stops near the Institute of Physics, at "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg".
By train: Timetables are available at the travel information service run by the RMV regional transport authority and Deutsche Bahn.
By streetcar: From Mainz main station ("Mainz Hbf") you reach the Institute of Physics by the following streetcars:
51 (Direction: Lerchenberg/Hindemithstraße, streetcar track “A”, Bahnhofsplatz)
53 (Direction: Lerchenberg/Hindemithstraße, streetcar track “L”, Alicenstraße)
Do not leave the streetcar at the stop "University" but continue until the next stop "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg".
From there continue past the high-rise building on the left for about 150 m and then turn left onto "Staudingerweg". After approx. 50 m you will pass "Ratatouille" and the central university cafeteria. The Institute of Physics (Building 2.412, Staudingerweg 7) is right past it. You will find a site map here. The offices of Prof. Peter van Dongen and the group secretary, Elvira Helf, are on the east wing of the third floor (rooms no. 03-123 and 03-128 respectively). It takes about 20-30 minutes maximum to get to the Institute of Physics from the main station.

Note: If you arrive by S-Bahn or bus shuttle holding an RMV or RNN ticket, this is also valid for the local streetcar/bus within Mainz. It is however only valid for travelling immediately after purchase and on the shortest route to your final destination.
By car: The road map here shows the motorway ring road around Mainz. You will reach the university on the A60, exit Mainz-Finthen: follow the direction "Saarstraße/Innenstadt". After passing the roundabout "Europaplatz" there will be the "Universität" exit. Follow the signs to the university. A map of the university campus is available here.
When arriving from the south or east you can leave the A60 at the exit "Mainz-Lerchenberg". Follow the direction "Innenstadt" until the university parking lot at "Uni-Einfahrt".
