By supporting third-party funding activity with internal funding, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz aims to increase its volume and support existing third-party-funded research.
In the preparatory phase of a project, this can be accomplished through seed funding for individual research projects or collaborative research projects (only if a call for full proposals has already been issued), with the goal of securing third-party funding for the project in the short to medium term.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Stufe-I Team before submitting your application.
For detailed information on grant amounts, project durations, and eligble costs, please refer to our overview of funding lines and the guidance provided in the application form, available in the Download Centre.
Seed Funding for Individual Projects
From now on, researchers in an early phase of their academic career have the opportunity to apply for seed funding for third-party funded research projects. With this measure, we aim to continue providing targeted incentives to develop innovative research ideas, to enable researchers to secure their own external funding and to support the development of an independent scientific career.

Seed Funding for Collaborative Projects
Seed funding for collaborative projects supports researchers at JGU in preparing promising third-party funding proposals for national and international consortia – for example SFB, TRR, GRK or comparable funding formats. The objective is to create optimal conditions for developing a scientifically excellent and competitive funding proposal, thereby enhancing the chances of success in the peer-review process.
Seed funding can only be granted after a request to submit a full proposal has been issued. Exceptions apply to single-stage EU funding formats (see below). Due to the typically single-stage procedure for EU collaborative projects, seed funding in such cases requires a personal consultation with the EU Office within the Research Funding Unit. E-Mail contact: EU-Office
Seed funding is not available for DFG Research Groups, DFG Kolleg-Forschungsgruppen, or DFG package proposals.
There is no right to the granting of seed funding.
