Research Interests

I am interested in understanding the effects of climatic warming on pollinators, both in terms of phenotypic plasticity but also in terms of their evolutionary genetic potential. To do this, I apply comparative genomic and population genomic techniques, as well as transcriptomics and lab experiments.

PhD Project

In my PhD, I aim to contribute to the understanding of the adaptive potential of mason bees, an ecologically important group of solitary bees, to future predicted global warming using transcriptomic and genomic methods with a special focus on the vulnerable phase of seasonal diapause.

To this end, I will expose overwintering mason bees (Osmia bicornis and Osmia cornuta) to increased heat stress in laboratory experiments lasting several months and investigate molecular genetic changes via transcriptome and genome sequencing and identify temperature-sensitive genes. Furthermore, I will map the population genetic differences of these two species over an extended geographical area with climatic and phenological variance and analyse which gene loci show signs of recent selection and divergent genetic diversity. A particular focus will be on analysing the loci of the previously identified temperature-sensitive genes of the overwintering experiment to then infer the evolutionary potential of these two wild bee species to adapt to warmer diapause seasons.
