Each semester, the Department of Anthropology and African Studies offers at least three seminar courses on African literary studies:

  • introductory courses, e.g., "Introduction to African Literatures", "African Short Stories", "African Literature in the 21st Century", "Creative Writing in African Languages"
  • courses on specific topics in African literatures, e.g., "The African Bildungsroman", "African Literary Cityscapes", "The Representation of Civil War in African Literature", "African Literature and the Language Issue", "Comics in Africa"
  • courses with a regional, national or linguistic focus, e.g., "Yorùbá Literature and Video Film Adaptations", "The History and Society of Zimbabwe from the Perspective of Women Writers".

The seminar courses form part of the department's B.A. "Anthropology" and M.A. "Anthropology" but can also be attended in the context of the new, interdisciplinary M.A. "World Literature".
