The Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are characterised by a strong practical orientation. In addition to initial empirical explorations in the Bachelor’s programme, participation in a large two-semester and a small one-semester research project is obligatory in the Master’s programme. These usually take place in cooperation with non-university research institutions and include all steps of an independent study, from conception to publication of the results. The various projects not only serve to concretely test participants’ methodological and theoretical approaches, but they also have the purpose of gaining valuable insights into potential fields of work and establishing corresponding contacts while still studying.
