At least since the 1980s men get into the focus of US-american, since the 1990s also of german gender studies. In its beginnings masculinity studies, as it is called, discussed masculinity in a singular form. Today, we talk about masculinites in plural, which means men and masculinities are discussed in their variety and in their spatial, temporal, and social characteristics.

Not only an academic interest increases the popularity of the topic. Masculinities are also widely discussed in public fields. On the one hand for example there is an ideological requirement for a renaissance of manliness at the political right. On the other hand, so the representatives of more politically left positions, the patriarchy was about to fall and what we can observe recently, was a last rise of it. At the same time, we can observe a dissolving of strict gender orders as we can see it by an increased visibility of trans and nonbinary persons.

In our seminar we pose the question in which way masculinities shift between progressive constructions and retraditionalization. Also, we are going to discuss how masculinity is constructed in different groups. Body, communities, and desire are going to be central terms of our discussions. In this context we focus on historic as well as contemporary perspectives to trace origins, developments, and perhaps the dissolving of masculinities
