Financial Support

The possible financial support is always dependent on the funding of each project year. Changes may occur in the summer of each year.

Students with a successful application in the current project year 2023/2024 will receive a mobility grant for a maximum of 6 months (international mobility for a maximum of 4 months). Additional days/months of the traineeship cannot be financially supported.

Trainees who receive a traineeship allowance (salary or other financial benefits) of more than 2000 EUR/month will only receive a grant for 2 months (the remaining duration of the traineeship will be zero-grant, which means the trainee will still have Erasmus+ status but not receive any financial support for these days), trainees with more than 1000 EUR/month for a maximum of 3 months.

The EU-ServicePoint will pay out the Erasmus+ grant once the complete application and the mutually signed Grant Agreement (by the student and the legal representative of the EU-ServicePoint) are on hand.

 

How much is the monthly grant?

The amount of the monthly grant depends on the country of the traineeship and includes a top-up of 150 EUR for trainees. There are three country categories within the Erasmus+ program which reflect the costs of living in the respective countries (Group 1 reflects the highest costs of living, Group 3 the lowest). As a financial incentive for sustainable travel (green travel), a one-time travel allowance of EUR 50 and up to four days of additional funding is granted (proof of e.g. train tickets required)

Fewer Opportunities: special funding for students & graduates

• with disabilities (from GdB 20) or a chronic desease or students & graduates going abroad with children: In addition to the normal monthly rates a top-up of 250 euros is granted. The GdB must be proven by documents. The relevant documents remain with the EU-Servicepoint. A student with a chronic illness that is  assiociated with considerable additional costs can be funded if proven by a medical certificate. The additional funds can also be granted to couples with children. Double funding for a child must then be ruled out. The presence of the child(ren) must be proven by proper documentation such as travel documents. Relevant documents remain in the student’s file at the EU-ServicePoint.

 

• First-time academics (students from a non-academic home): Students and graduates from a non-academic home who are funded for a study or traineeship abroad through Erasmus+ may receive additional financial support if both parents or caregivers do not hold a degree from a higher education institution. Courses completed abroad by one parent that are not recognised as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) are considered an academic degree for the purposes of the eligibility criteria for receiving additional funding, so there is no entitlement to the top-up amount.

 

• Employed students and graduates who are funded for a study or traineeship abroad through Erasmus+ and cannot continue their employment during the stay abroad.  - The employment must have existed for at least six months continuously in the period beginning one year before the start of the internship until the start of the internship. A longer period of employment before the start of the mobility is not a criterion for exclusion.
  - During the minimum period of employment before application, the monthly income must be above 450 EUR and below 850 EUR (net earnings of all activities per month added up).
  - The activity(ies) in the sending country must not be continued during the stay abroad (this also includes mobile working, working online, paid leave, etc.). However, termination is not a prerequisite; the employment contract can also be paused.
  - As a rule, self-employed activities and dual/part-time study programmes with a fixed salary are excluded.

The special funding can only be applied once (the top-ups cannot be accumulated) for the financially supported period.

 

Additional grants for students with “special needs” (degree of disability at least 20, with chronic diseases orgoing abroad with children): It is of great importance for the Erasmus+ program to financially support students with serious disabilities in order to enable them to go abroad. The additional financial demand resulting from the mobility needs of students with a degree of disability of at least 20, with chronic dideases or who go abroad with children will be calculated individually if an application is submitted. The calculation and approval apply to the concrete mobility but are based upon the calculation of the additional financial demand abroad. These grants can only be given if other national institutions (like health insurance companies, social assistance offices, “Studierendenwerke”, etc.) do not cover these costs. The EU-ServicePoint requires proof of this. Relevant documents remain in the student’s file there. The application should be submitted to the EU-ServicePoint two-and-a-half to three months before the stay, as the National Agency DAAD must receive it two months before the start of the traineeship for further processing.

 

Blended mobility und short term mobility

• A blended mobility includes a physical presence of 5-30 days (short term) on site in a participating country, with a virtual component (collaborative online learning, exchange and teamwork within the framework of joint projects and / or online courses), which is mandatory, but is not specified in time and corresponds to a workload of 3 ECTS.

• A short term mobility for doctoral students includes a physical presence of 5-30 days on site in a participating country, with or without virtual components (not mandatory)

How often and how long can I be supported?

Within the Erasmus+ program, students can be supported for up to 12 months per study cycle (BA, MA, PhD) for studying or traineeships abroad. Students can take advantage of several mobilities abroad per study cycle for studies or traineeships for a maximum of 12 months. For each (new) support of a traineeship, the minimum duration of two months applies.

Please be aware that the EU-ServicePoint only financially supports traineeships for up to 6 months per study cycle ("International mobility" with partner countries 4 months and when receiving a high salary and/or benefits 2 or 3 months), even if the traineeship exceeds this period. However, you will have the Erasmus+ status for the complete duration of the traineeship. You may keep this status for a total of 12 months per study cycle whether you get financial support or not. You can split your Erasmus+ contingent of 12 months as you choose and use it both for studies or traineeships (e.g. 5 months of studies and 6 months of traineeship).

Is it possible to combine Erasmus+ and BAföG?

A combination of Erasmus+ funding and Auslands-BAföG is possible. The current terms and regulations apply for the deduction of Erasmus+ mobility grants. This means that Erasmus+ funding which exceeds €300 will be deducted from Auslands-BAföG.
