Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) regards itself as both a European and international university. Frequent research and teaching cooperations with foreign universities, a comparatively large proportion of foreign students amounting to 14%, and the large number of researchers from abroad testify to this. In 2007, in the category of student exchange, JGU ranked first of all German universities that participated in the European Union’s ERASMUS Exchange Program and received, as a particular distinction, the seal of “E-Quality 2007” from the DAAD in June 2008. In the field of research, a positive result of this kind is also aimed at, as internationality is an essential quality feature in terms of international competition.
Within the concept of the internal university research funding, specific measures for promoting internationalisation are planned. These measures aim particularly at raising the number of foreign visiting scholars. Thereby special attention is paid towards attracting Humboldt prize winners and scholarship holders. Furthermore, resources are also provided for supporting the organisation and visits of international scientific events. Finally, there is the possibility to invite distinguished researchers from abroad to Johannes Gutenberg University for a period of several months, and fellowships from the Gutenberg Research College can help to finance longer stays.
