Cooperations / Network

In its research, Johannes Gutenberg University builds on intensive cooperation with partners from science, business and culture. In addition to cooperation with a large number of national and international universities and research institutes as well as companies, one focus is on regional integration with strategically important partners, such as the two Max-Planck-Institutes located on campus or the Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research based in Darmstadt.

The intensive regional networking of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is also reflected in the university's involvement in the Mainz Science Alliance. This close cooperation helped the city of Mainz to win the title "City of Science 2011", which was awarded to it in April 2010 by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany).

The Johannes Gutenberg University maintains particularly close relations with the following regional partners:

Max-Planck-Institutes in Mainz

  • Max Planck Institute for Chemistry with a thematic focus on atmospheric chemistry, biogeochemistry, geochemistry, cosmochemistry and cloud physics and chemistry.
  • Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research with the thematic focus on chemical and physical properties of polymers, basic research for new applications in electronics, biomedicine, packaging materials and vehicle construction.

In accordance with the research foci, especially the institutes of the university departments 08 (Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science) and 09 (Chemistry, Pharmacy, Geosciences) have close contacts with the two Max Planck Institutes in Mainz. The intensive cooperation is not only expressed in joint applications in the "Excellence Initiative of the Federal Government and the Länder", but is also evident in the establishment of a Max Planck Graduate Centre. In June 2009, the Max Planck Graduate Center was founded with the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz to facilitate joint doctorates between the university and the Max Planck Institutes and to attract excellent doctoral students on the basis of the highly qualified range of graduate training.
