University Boards

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is both a corporation under public law and a state facility. The Executive University Board governs the university.

In accordance with its constitutional order, the university is structured into ten faculties in which related and neighboring specialist areas are consolidated under consideration of their relevance to instruction. The University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is considered a faculty of JGU insofar as it fulfills medical and scientific tasks in the fields of research, study and teaching. The Mainz University of Music and the Mainz Academy of Art are considered as integral parts of JGU.

The university fulfills the tasks of self-administration as assigned to it by the University Act on its own authority. Each decision-making board includes members from the groups of university lecturers, students, academic and non-academic employees who are eligible to vote. They are elected in free, equal, and secret ballots.
