Guidance and Advisory Services

For prospective doctoral candidates

You are

  • an advanced student or graduate of a humanities or social sciences programme at the Johannes Gutenberg University and interested in the possibility of doing a doctorate?
  • an advanced student or graduate of another university and interested in doing a doctorate in the humanities or social sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg University?

If so, we can offer you an initial no obligation consultation by e-mail regardless of whether you are a GSHS member. If you have not been able to find the answers to your questions on our information pages, or if you have further questions, please get in touch at gshs@uni-mainz.de. We will get back to you and let you know whether we can advise you further. If we can’t help with your particular question, we will point you in the direction of the university information or advice centre best suited to do so.

Junior members (doctorate preparation programme)

We regularly advertise junior memberships for advanced students and graduates interested in participating in a structured programme to help prepare them for their doctorate. This includes personalised advice tailored to your individual needs. Further information on junior membership

Full members (doctoral candidates)

Are you already a member but have questions about your doctorate that neither your supervisor(s) nor your faculty office can help with? Would you like advice on how best to organise your doctorate, on the sorts of skills you can acquire alongside working on your dissertation, or the opportunities a doctorate can open up for you? Are you experiencing problems with your project or wondering how to get the best out of the collaboration with your supervisor?

We are here to help and advise you! We will take time to talk things over with you and, if we can’t solve your particular problem, we’ll put you in touch with someone who can.

Advice is provided by the director of the GSHS, Dr Jeanne Ruffing.

Please just send us an e-mail or give us a call on 06131-39-21115.
