14.-19.09.2008: Summer School "THERMODYNAMICS OF POLYMER-CONTAINING MIXTURES"

Organiser: Bernhard A. Wolf

The school will take place September 14th-19th, 2008 in Cadzand-Bad, at the seaside in the Netherlands.

The scope of the school is to supply the participants with sufficient thermodynamic knowledge to tackle thermodynamic problems, which are omnipresent in all fields of polymer science.

The school will cover the entire range from basic phenomenological considerations to a detailed modeling of the phase behavior of binary, ternary and multinary mixtures as a function of temperature and pressure. On the material side it will deal with linear and branched homopolymers plus random copolymers and block copolymers.

A list of planned topics and invited speakers is given below.

Students are asked to provide a poster on their ongoing research and a short verbal introduction (about 5 minutes). MAINZ students receive credit points for this active participation in the summer school.

Please use the application form on our website (www.polymat.uni-mainz.de) for registration. The deadline for registration is on June 30, 2008. All registrations will be considered in order of arrival and the number of participants is restricted to 30 students.

We plan an excursion to the Delta works (a number of constructions that were built between 1950 and 1997 in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land from the sea).

Some of the planned topics are:

  • Gibbs energy and its minimization
  • Flory-Huggins interaction parameters
  • liquid/gas and liquid/liquid phase equilibria
  • calorimetry
  • effects of polymer architecture and polydispersity
  • interfacial phenomena
  • shear induced changes in phase diagrams
  • polymer fractionation

  • S. Enders
  • R. Koningsveld
  • E. Nies
