VAMOS at the 13th Gas Field Workshop in Ecuador

In September 2017 a group of VAMOS scientists (Alexandra Gutmann, Nicole Bobrowski, Thorsten Hoffmann) participated in the 13th Gas Field Workshop in Ecuador, organized by the Commission on the Chemistry of Volcanic Gases (CCVG) and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth Interior.

The main objective of the workshop was the presentation and discussion of new and existing direct sampling, in situ sampling and remote sensing techniques as well as the discussion of the results from such measurements. The workshop included four days of conference meetings and presentations (including one presentation from VAMOS), five days of field measurement and sample collection at Tungurahua, Guagua Pichincha, Pululahua and Cotopaxi volcanoes and two four and five days field excursion to El Reventador volcano and to the Galápagos Islands. Although the samples taken have not been measured yet it already turned out that the collection of complementary volcanic gas measurements from local volcanoes and the discussion of the latest theories and observations related to volcanic degassing was highly beneficial for all participants.
