Information on the intended operation of the TRIGA Mainz research reactor

according to §7c, paragraph 2 AtG

The TRIGA Mainz research reactor is in regular operation on weekdays, from Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Fridays, the service ends at 12:00. The reactor can be used in two shifts for up to 12 weeks a year, then from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The research reactor at the University of Mainz can be used in two operating modes. In continuous operation, the reactor can provide a selectable thermal power of 100 mW to 100 kW permanently for various experiments. Alternatively, the reactor can offer a neutron pulse of increased flux density of a few tens to hundreds of milliseconds at a maximum energy release of 10 MJ about every 15 minutes in so-called pulse mode.

Once a month, the operating and safety equipment of the reactor is inspected, and the plant remains shut down for the duration of these tests. In addition, the safety devices shall be inspected annually in the presence of an expert appointed by the supervisory and licensing authority.
(according to §20 AtG) within the framework of the officially prescribed periodic inspections.

The reactor is thus operated on a total of about 200 days a year for research, training as well as for regular maintenance and periodic inspections.

The Rhineland-Palatinate supervisory and licensing authority responsible for the TRIGA Mainz research reactor provides information on reportable events or accidents on its homepage. (in german only)
