Metamorphism

The map and inset on the right shows the distribution of regional metamorphic zones in Scotland.

The majority of Scotland enjoyed Barrovian metamorphism that reflects a ‘normal’ crustal geotherm (moderate dP/dT), characterised by the kyanite to sillimanite transition in metapelitic rocks. Metamorphism in the Buchan area in the NE was at lower P, and is characterised by the andalusite to sillimanite transition in metapelitic rocks .

We will be examining these classic metamorphic areas, principally looking at mineral assemblage developent but also at variations in protolith composition, sedimentology and structure.
