Program structure – Bachelor of Education Mathematics

The teaching degree program ‘Bachelor of Education Mathematics’ is consists of Mathematics and one additional specialist field. You can combine Mathematics with any subject at the University of Mainz that is compatible with the respective degree. In addition to attending courses on teaching methodology for their respective subject, students will also enroll in Education Studies. The standard period of study is six semesters.

During the first two semesters (introductory study period (Grundstudium)), students will learn the fundamentals of mathematics. The respective modules are defined in the examination regulations and the module catalog. In order to facilitate a transition between degree programs, the mathematics courses taken in the first academic year are nearly identical to those in the degree program ‘Bachelor of Science Mathematics‘. During the subsequent four semesters (3rd-6th), students will delve deeper into the basics and will focus on the fundamentals of numerical mathematics and stochastics (advanced study period (Hauptstudium)). Teaching methodology is also taught in the advanced study period. Provided that Mathematics was selected as the first specialist field, the Bachelor’s thesis and the final oral examination are scheduled for the sixth semester.

First to second semester

  • Fundamentals of analysis, linear algebra and geometry, and elementary mathematics (lectures and courses)

Advanced study period

Third to sixth semester

  • Specialization in the previously acquired fundamentals (lectures and courses)
  • Teaching methodology (lectures, courses and seminars)
  • Fundamentals of numerical mathematics and stochastics (lectures, courses)
