Program structure – Master of Science Applied Bioinformatics

The degree program “Master of Science Applied Bioinformatics” is an interdisciplinary program that requires you to have a Bachelor’s degree in one of the Life Sciences, e.g. biology. The degree program lasts four semesters (standard period of study).

During the first two semesters, students will learn the basics of computer science and mathematics. This should enable them to analyze programs as well as modify and apply bioinformatic algorithms. In addition, advanced courses in Life Sciences will help expand students’ knowledge of biology. These courses will provide students with an in-depth understanding of biological systems and procedures and will introduce them to cutting-edge topics. Students can choose from a range of biological application fields depending on their personal preference. During the second and third semester, students will be taught important algorithms and methods from different areas of bioinformatics. Lectures and seminars will focus on methodical aspects, whereas lab courses will focus on putting these methods into practice. In the third and fourth semester, students will apply current bioinformatic methods to actual problems that occur in biological research. The Master’s thesis seminar will assist students in their research preparation. The seminar usually consists of a small group of students and can be tailored to their individual needs. This seminar gives students the chance to focus on literature required for their research. The Master’s thesis is written under the guidance of a Computer Science lecturer and a lecturer in the Life Sciences. Students will present and discuss the results of their research in the final oral examination.
