Research Interests

Ice processes in clouds – investigations using multiscale asymptotics
(within the BMBF-Project HD(CP)2)

Ice processes in clouds represent a special challenge for mathematical
modelling, particularly because of the wide range of spatial and
temporal scales they involve. The spatial scales range from microscale
for formation of ice particles, small scale for turbulance to large
scale of several kilometers for the dynamics of clouds. The involved
time scales vary from milli seconds for the process of nucleation to
seconds for diffusional growth to minutes, hours and days for
sedimentation and dynamic processes. Based on a complete set of
equations for dynamics-cloud physics including a simple microphysical
clouds model and the 3D Navier-Stokes equations the method of
multiscale asymptotic analysis is a suitable mathematical tool to
handle this scale variety.

Further Research Interests:
- Stiffness of ordinary differential equations
- Matched asymptotic approximations
- Multiple scale expansions
