The Jahn Library holds a large amount of literary works by African writers. The collection includes works by internationally renowned and prize-winning writers like Nadine Gordimer, Wole Soyinka, J.M. Coetzee (Nobel Prize for Literature), Léopold Sédar Senghor and Chinua Achebe (Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels), Ben Okri (Booker Prize), Marie NDiaye (Prix Goncourt); or Yvonne Vera, Fatou Diome and Aminatta Forna (LiBeraturpreis) but also works by less well-known or younger writers, many of them published locally in different African countries.

Full texts of works by African writers published in the African Writers Series (Heinemann) are accessible online from within the university network.

Titles availabe at the Jahn Library are not yet completely searchable through the university's online catalogue. The shelf marks of many of the titles aquired before 1995/1996 can only be searched locally through the card catalogue of the library of the Department of Anthropology and African Studies and a complementary database.
