What is a museum and who are they for? Whose cultural heritage do they hold and why? In this joint learning programme, museum approaches in Cameroon and Germany will be examined from these two perspectives. Together with students of museology and museography from the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Douala in Nkongsamba, different museum concepts will be discussed. This will include a look at both European and African institutional histories.
In the seminar, competing understandings of things (as objects) as well as storage and exhibition concepts will be analysed, allowing for a change of perspective through digital exchange with students from these two partner institutions. Together, we will explore in what framework things can be preserved and presented in a sustainable and decolonial way that include both European and African approaches. Do we need a new understanding of museums and museology? What can a decolonial museological approach look like in order to arrive at an epistemological break? What can and should museums provide in the 21st century? Do they need restructuring? What kind of institution is needed for whom and how can colonial institutions overcome their legacy?
