Fieldwork is considered as the key empirical foundation of anthropological work and goes along with a range of specific challenges. In this seminar we will concentrate on certain - rare or typical - lines of conflict. A reflection of these will enable students of anthropology to handle the inherent particularities of the discipline in a critical, self-reflexive and well-grounded way. These conflicts range, for example, from difficult access to the field, from limits of communication and understanding, to role, relationship and power conflicts that can arise as gender-sensitive or in collaborative research, up to ethical conflicts that need to be made relevant in research with vulnerable groups or in violent contexts.Dates
