Requirements for Application as a Doctoral student

The following requirements apply for doctoral students with DFG-funding and associated doctoral students likewise.

Specific requirements

  • The topic of your doctoral thesis must fit in with one of our four research domains.
  • Doctoral students will be involved in an obligatory training programme.
  • The RTG's official language is German but a thesis may, upon previous application, also be submitted in English.
  • The primary thesis director will belong to the the discipline in which the doctoral thesis will be submitted. The second director will belong to a different discipline.

Formal requirements

  • a diploma or masters degree (or equivalent) completed on or ahead of schedule with excellent results, especially in one of the philological or archaeological disciplines involved in the RTG
  • complying with the prerequisites for doctoral students in Fachbereich (Faculties) 05 or 07 of Johannes Gutenberg University and those applying to a doctorate at Johannes Gutenberg University (
  • German and English language skills
  • communicative and interpersonal competence
  • openness for interdisciplinary exchange
  • motivation to play an active role within the Programme


All doctoral students have to enroll at Johannes Gutenberg University.
If a doctoral thesis is to be submitted in German, applicants will have to demonstrate very good German language skills corresponding to "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (DSH)" / "German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants" (Level C1 after CEFR) or equivalents thereof (further information here) to qualify for enrollment at Johannes Gutenberg University.

Furthermore, we expect continuous presence at Johannes Gutenberg University during the whole course of the programme.
