Academic Vita

Tom Ullrich studied media, culture, photography and film studies at Bauhaus University Weimar, Lumière University Lyon 2 and Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3. From 2011 to 2017 he worked as a research assistant at the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) and as editorial assistant for the Journal Zeitschrift für Medien- und Kulturforschung. Since 2017, he has been a researcher and lecturer at the Institute for Film, Theater, Media, and Culture Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He received his doctorate in 2023 with a dissertation on barricade construction, street fighting and urban planning in 19th century Paris.

The dissertation was funded by a scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation from 2017 to 2020. More information about the PhD project.

Since 2021, Tom Ullrich is conducting research on security, surveillance, and control of early railway station infrastructures in France and England in the project C04 of CRC 1482 »Studies in Human Categorization«.
