Content of the Master's Degree Program

The joint degree master's program in children's and youth literature/book and reading studies imparts knowledge of current and historical research questions in the field of children's and youth media. The focus especially  lies on the scientific examination of the cultural and economic meanings of children's and youth media, which are captured in the interplay of literary, cultural, book and other media science issues.

The program is addressed  to students who wish to extend their knowledge of interdisciplinary perspectives on book and media market-oriented as well as cultural, literary, and media studies and therefore want to acquire the skills to classify the various literary and media phenomena in their historical and present-day contexts.

In the different courses, in-depth knowledge of the history, themes, narrative and publication forms of children's and youth literature and media is imparted. The program focuses on research approaches in the field of literature for children and yound adults in an international context and, in particular, on the examination of theories and methods of literary, book and cultural studies, including discourses on childhood, youth, gender and generation. In addition, the program offers opportunities for independent experimentation in neighboring disciplines as well as in research- and profession-related projects.

The master's program is run by the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (Institute for Youth Book Research) in cooperation with the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (Gutenberg Institute for World Literature and Written Media/Department of Book Studies) as part of the strategic alliance Rhine-Main Universities. In addition, the program cooperates with important regional and national partners from the children's and youth media-related publishing and media world.
