Dr. Martin Neumann

Since March 2018, Martin Neumann, PhD, is Research Associate in the team of Sociology of Technology and Innovation, Social Simulation, where he is - amongst other things - involved in the projects CECAN, AI-FORA and AI-NAVI as well as the organization of the FORTHEM Summerschool.

He has studied philosophy, mathematics, and social sciences at the University of Osnabrueck, Germany, and obtained a PhD in philosophy in 2002. Subsequently, he worked as lecturer for research methods and philosophy of social sciences at the Department of Social Science at the University of Osnabrueck. Later, he joined the EU-FP 6 framework project EMIL on simulating norm emergence, where he worked at the Uni-versity of Bayreuth, Germany. He was assistant professor for sociological theory at RWTH Aachen Uni-versity and undertook research at the EU-FP 7 project GLODERS, studying the global dynamics of extortion racket systems. Next he became Research Associate and Lecturer at the Jacobs University, Bremen.

• Social Simulation: conceptual modelling, agent based modelling
• Qualitative data analysis: grounded theory, history of mentalities
• Quantitative data analysis: statistics, network analysis, text-mining
• Conflict research: ethnic conflicts, Balkan
• Criminology: organized crime, extortion
• Epistemology: philosophy of social sciences, philosophy of social simulation, history and sociology of knowledge, philosophy of probability theory
