Biography

  • 1974-1981 undergraduate studies in Protestant theology and Romance languages in Heidelberg and Paris.
  • 1981-1982 lecturer and “Élève à titre étranger” at the École Normale Supérieur (ENS) in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France.
  • 1982–1994 academic assistant at the Theology Faculty of Heidelberg University.
  • 1986 awarded PhD
  • 1993 Habilitation in Heidelberg
  • 1994-1998 Professorship of Historical Theology at the Department of Protestant Theology, Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main
  • Since 1998 Professor of Church History and History of Dogma at the Faculty of Protestant Theology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz
  • Since 2005 Director at the Leibniz Institute of European History Mainz
  • 2017 Fellowship at Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften of the Goethe-University Frankfurt/M.
  • 2020 Fellowship at Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies (MCAS) of the University Hamburg.

Current Research Projects

  • “Controversia et Confessio. Edition of Documents on Creed Formation and Confessionalization (1548-1580),” long-term research and editiorial project of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz in cooperation with the Johannes Gutenberg-University and the Leibniz-Institute of European History.
  • European Religious Peace Agreements - A Digital Edition (EuReD), long-term project at the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz in cooperation with the Leibniz-Institute of European History Mainz and the University and State Library Darmstadt
  • Organization of the Spring Conference on the Wittenberg Reformation, together with the Institute for Church History of the University of Leipzig and the Leucorea-Foundation of the University of Halle in Wittenberg.
