The protection of personal data is a matter of considerable concern to Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). We collect and process personal information from visitors to our web pages in accordance with the stipulations of the German Telemedia Act (TMG) and the Federal and State Data Protection Acts (BDSG/LDSG).
We will not make public or release your personal information to third parties without appropriate authorization. Below, we explain what information is collected when you visit our websites and exactly how it is used.
Collection and processing of information from Internet users
When you visit one of our web pages, our web server temporarily stores the information related to your visit in a log file. The following information is collected and retained until the log file is automatically deleted:
- IP address of the visiting device
- date and time of visit
- name, URL, and quantity of data downloaded from the file accessed
- access status (file uploaded, file not found etc.)
- identification details for the browser and operating system used
- website from which our site was accessed
We process this data to enable our site to function (connection set-up), to maintain our system security, to facilitate the technical administration of our network infrastructure, and to enhance our Internet services. IP addresses will be evaluated only in the event that the Internet infrastructure of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is subject to attack.
No personal user profiles are generated. The German Telemedia Act (TMG) in Article 15, Section 3 permits the generation of pseudonymous user profiles, assuming that there are no objections to this on the part of the relevant users. Where we make use of this option on our Internet pages, you will be properly informed of your right to object.
Except in the form cited, we will not process your personal data unless you specifically consent to the additional processing. You retain the right to withdraw such consent at any future point in time.
Use and disclosure of personal data
In certain cases, you may need to provide personal data, such as your name, address, or other contact details, in order to access and use our Internet services. Where this is the case, the form, extent, and purpose of the collection and processing of such data will be explained in the appropriate context.
Your personal data will only be disclosed to state institutions and authorities when mandatory under national legislation or required for litigation purposes and/or prosecution following attacks on our Internet infrastructure. Your data will not be disclosed to third parties under any other circumstances.
Consent to additional use of information
In order to use certain services provided through our websites, such as the press release distribution service and our newsletter subscription service, you will be required to provide supplementary personal data that we will additionally process (e.g. in the form of longer-term storage of e-mail and/or postal addresses). When you enter and send the requested data, you automatically consent to its use in this form. However, you retain the right to withdraw this consent at any point of time in the future. Should you wish to do so, please contact the site operator specified in the relevant legal notice.
Certain of our Internet services provided through the web address www.uni-mainz.de require the completion of online forms (e.g. in order to register for our press release distribution service, to register to attend certain events, or to subscribe to our newsletters). The data entered in these forms is generally transmitted using an encrypted connection (SSL). However, redirects to this form due to missing or invalid data input will need to use a non-encrypted connection. Any e-mail confirmation of data receipt will also be sent in a non-encrypted form. This means that such data is not fully protected from unauthorized third party access. We will inform you explicitly whenever your data is sent in non-encrypted form.
Press release distribution, newsletter, expert consultation services
In order to supply you with our press releases and/or newsletters, we essentially require only an e-mail address to which the press releases or newsletters can be sent in digital form. You are free to supply additional information on a voluntary basis. We will use this information to contact you personally, to verify your e-mail address, or to respond to any queries you may have. We will require your postal address in order to send you requested or additional material. For our press release distribution service, you will be required to specify your press organization so that we can verify that we are supplying a media organization.
You can cancel your subscription to our press release and newsletter services at any time. Either contact us by e-mail or respond directly to our e-mail to make the cancellation or indicate your wish to cancel.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz uses technical and administrative security systems to protect any personal information in our care against accidental or deliberate manipulation, loss or erasure, and attempts by unauthorized third parties to access it.
