Contents
Topic: Bibliophiles and bibliophily in the USIn this class, we will take a look at forms, actors and institutions of American bibliophily, starting in the 17th century and ending with the status quo today. We will reflect the role of the book in the US as an object of cultural value and as a part of collections. Our main focus will be on private book collections, but we will also talk about bibliophilic societies (among others, the Grolier Club and the Caxton Club) as well as the American antiquarian book market and book auctions in America. We will also discuss the important role of bibliophiles in supporting the public library system in the USA, but also in establishing independent research libraries (for example the Folger Library in DC or the Pierpont Morgang Library in NYC).
