Course offerings | Grades 5 through 10

Early Bloomers (End of February through May)

It's not easy for early bloomers. They only have a short time window in which to grow - these are not the best conditions for survival. In this course, children explore the environmental conditions of early bloomers as well as the tricks and strategies they need for survival. They get to know all about onions, tubers, and rhizomatous plants and their habitats. Small experiments to detect starch clarify their storage function.

Rain Forest Research Station

About half of all animal and plant species live in tropical rain forests. Kids examine this fascinating habitat at various stops along the tour. Simple experiments are used to point out the ecological and structural differences to our domestic forests. Exercises highlight the possible uses of these forests, the way they are being destroyed, and how each and every one of us can do something to protect them.

Desert Research Station

Water is the most important foundation for life. Yet in the dry deserts of Earth, water is very scarce. A few plants have learnt to survive by deploying special adaptations, and it would seem they can do without water. Through close observation and with simple experiments, kids examine the various adaptive strategies and ponder what we can do to stop deserts from spreading.

Tropical Crop Plants

Many plants we eat or drink every day or use in other ways come from the tropics. The school children have to use all five senses when investigating the origin, history, content, cultivation, and processing of plants such as cocoa, bananas, etc. .

Chocolate Workshop

Chocolate spread, chocolate flakes, chocolate drinks, or "simply" chocolate - no one can resist the sweet temptation that comes from cocoa beans. But where do these cocoa beans come from and how are these delicious cocoa products made? These and other questions to do with chocolate are solved within the team before the grand finale of making a chocolate product. Further Information ...
