Horticultural Rarities for Plant Lovers
The annual plant bazaar at the Botanic Garden of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz offers garden enthusiasts and plant lovers an opportunity to acquire seedlings and plants from Botanic Garden stock. The special features on offer include early flowering perennials (Alyssum, leopard's bane, arabis hirsuta, Labrador violet), coffee plants, grasses, outdoor orchids (Bletilla), hardy fuchsias, ground cover perennials, touch-me-not (Mimosa pudica), and clary sage.
The Friends of the Botanic Garden were also present at the bazaar. Besides a bookstall covering botanical and gardening topics and guided tours (such as along the summer flower beds or on the history and variety of potato species), the kitchen garden of the Friends also offered interesting insights into old garden and old vegetable species, as well as their forms and uses.
