The Institute of Computer Science celebrates 30 years anniversary

23.05.2014

When Prof. Jürgen Perl was appointed professor for computer science in Mainz in 1984, the Institute of Computer Science was born. 30 years have passed and the institute experienced some remarkable developments: today 6 professors teach and research highly up-to-date areas including big data, efficient algorithms, bioinformatics and high performance computing. An interdisciplinary advanced program focusing on numerical mathematics and computational sciences (SRFN) also plays a central role in research. More than 500 students are currently enrolled in the study programs. Two master programs were established in 2012: Computational Science and Applied Bioinformatics. Another master with a focus on economics is in preparation.

The Institute of Computer Science celebrates its 30 year anniversary on May 23, 2014 under the motto “Big Data und Effiziente Algorithmen”. Prof. Bertil Schmidt, General Manager of the Institute, will inaugurate the one-day celebration at the Atrium Maximum at Alte Mensa. The President of the JGU, Prof. G. Krausch, and the Dean of Faculty 08, Prof. R. Höpfner, will also join the festivities.

The audience is invited to a wide range of interesting lectures adressed by professors of the Institute as well as two well-known guest speakers from TU Munich and MPI Saarbrücken. The intention of the event is to highlight the multiple challenges that arise in the fields of big data, efficient algorithms, bioinformatics, high performance computing etc.
