Das Projekt “Die altägyptische Nekropole von Assiut: Dokumentation und Interpretation” wurde seit Mitte 2005 bis Ende 2019 von der DFG als Langzeitvorhaben gefördert, so dass eine kontinuierliche Arbeit von mehr als 14,5 Jahren ermöglicht war. Ein erster Survey unter der Leitung von J. Kahl fand bereits 2003 statt, die Arbeiten im Jahr 2004 wurden von der JGU Mainz als Anschub finanziert.
Die Funde, Befunde, Inschriften und Dekorationen verschiedener nahe der mittelägyptischen Stadt Assiut gelegener Gaufürstengräber der Ersten Zwischenzeit (21. Jh. v. Chr.) und des Mittleren Reiches (20. Jh. v. Chr.) werden sukzessive adäquat bearbeitet und publiziert. Diese Unternehmungen erweitern die Kenntnisse über Geschichte und Kunst einer von Bürgerkrieg und darauf folgendem kulturellem und wirtschaftlichem Aufschwung gekennzeichneten Epoche. Ziel ist darüber hinaus, den Nekropolenberg Gebel Asyut al-gharbi auf seine zeitliche und qualitative Kontinuität über mehrere Jahrtausende hin zu betrachten, da Assiut großen Anteil am kulturellen Gedächtnis des Alten Ägypten besaß: Aus seiner Nekropole sind Inschriften der Ersten Zwischenzeit und des Mittleren Reiches (ca. 2145-1793 v.Chr.) bekannt, die mehr als 2000 Jahre in verschiedenen Orten Ägyptens wiederverwendet wurden. Die Gründe für diese Wertschätzung sind die theologische und religionsgeschichtliche Bedeutung Assiuts, die sprachliche Qualität der Inschriften und die sich in ihnen widerspiegelnde Geisteshaltung (hohes Selbstbewusstsein und gleichzeitige Loyalität zum König).
Projektleiter waren Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ursula Verhoeven-van Elsbergen von der JGU Mainz (seit 2004) und Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jochem Kahl von der FU Berlin (seit 2010), auf ägyptischer Seite agierten Kollegen von der Universität Sohag als weitere Grabungsleiter (Mahmoud El-Khadragy, Mohamed Abdelrahiem, Ahmed Alansary, Mahmoud El-Hamrawi, Hesham Faheed Ahmed). Unterstützt wurden die Arbeiten von Inspektoren und Restauratoren des Ägyptischen Antikendienstes (SCA).
Seit Februar 2008 besteht ein wissenschaftlicher Kooperationsvertrag zwischen dem Fachgebiet Ägyptologie, FB 07 Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und dem Department of Egyptology an der Faculty of Arts der University of Sohag/Mittelägypten.

The project “The ancient Egyptian necropolis of Asyut: documentation and interpretation” was funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation) from mid of 2005 until the end of 2019. Therefore this long-term project was allowing for sustained research and fieldwork over more than 14,5 years. The first survey guided by J. Kahl took place in 2003, the work in 2004 was financed by the JGU Mainz.
Findings, find-contexts, inscriptions and decorations of several nomarchs’ tombs of the First Intermediate Period (21st century BC) and the Middle Kingdom (20th century BC) situated near the city of Asyut in Middle Egypt will be thoroughly recorded and published. The research endeavour will increase the knowledge concerning the history and art marked by the civil war period as well as the subsequent epoch of significant cultural and economic progress. Furthermore the research objective is to examine the necropolis mountain Gebel Asyut al-gharbi, due to its chronological and qualitative contribution over several millennia, as Asyut retained a large role of the cultural memory of ancient Egypt: Inscriptions from the First Intermediate Period and Middle Kingdom (ca. 2145-1793 BC) are known to be from the necropolis of Asyut and were reused in different parts of Egypt for more than 2000 years. The reasons for the obvious value attributed to these works are the theological and religious-historical importance of Asyut, the linguistic quality of the inscriptions and the fact that they reflect mentality (high self-esteem and simultaneous loyalty to the king).
The project directors were Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ursula Verhoeven-van Elsbergen from Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (since 2004) and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jochem Kahl from the Freie Universität Berlin (since 2010). From the Egyptian side the additional field directors were coming from the University of Sohag (Mahmoud El-Khadragy, Mohamed Abdelrahiem, Ahmed Alansary, Mahmoud El-Hamrawi, Hesham Faheed Ahmed). Fieldwork on the project is supported by inspectors and restorers of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). In February, 2008, the Department of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, University Sohag/Egypt and the Department of Egyptology, Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz/Germany signed a Memorandum of Understanding of scientific co-operation.
