What is beautiful? What is art? Are they interconnected or can a work of art be anything else but beautiful? What do we mean when we call something beautiful, and to what kind of entity do we refer by judging something as a work of art? Can anyone sufficiently define what art is? And, perhaps even more interesting, can an work of art fail?There are lots of open and difficult questions one comes across when trying to deal with this ‘weak’ and ‘soft’ area of philosophical inquiry called aesthetics. So perhaps aesthetics as a mode of thinking about art (or does it mean something completely different?) is more challenging than we expected. In this course, we will try the explanatory status of different attempts to define ‘art’, ‘beautiful’, ‘aesthetically relevant’ as well as ‘aesthetically failed’, ‘ugly’ etc. by close readings of important texts, mainly from the 20th century onwards. Additionally, as a course concerning art has to be, we will examine the revealed criteria and modes of judging by applying them to some works which are generally referred to as works of art – and to some which are not.
