About

Professor Ariane Martin joined the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2002. She studied at the University of Marburg, where she was awarded a PhD (summa cum laude), after which she spent three years as research assistant at the Forschungsstelle Georg Büchner – Literature and History of the Vormärz Period and lectured at the University of Kassel. After gaining a post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) in 2002, Professor Martin was called to a chair of Modern German Literary History with an emphasis on Cultural Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. She was the recipient of various grants and prizes, including a PhD scholarship, and research grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Her research ranges broadly across modern German literature, focussing on the Sturm und Drang movement (J. M. R. Lenz, the young Goethe, the aesthetics of genius), the Vormärz period (Georg Büchner) up to and including early and classical modernism (naturalism, fin de siècle, the cultural history of the Weimar Republic, Heinrich Mann, Frank Wedekind, Irmgard Keun). She has also written widely on literary studies as cultural studies, gender studies, materialism and mediality, literary history, and edition philology. Major publications include the monographs Erotische Politik. Heinrich Manns erzählerisches Frühwerk and Die kranke Jugend. J. M. R. Lenz und Goethes Werther in der Rezeption des Sturm und Drang bis zum Naturalismus as well as several co-edited volumes, including Dichter der Immanenz. Vier Studien zu Georg Büchner and Georg Büchner’s Sämtliche Werke und Briefe. Professor Martin’s current project concerns the journalistic and essayistic works of Heinrich Mann between 1926 and 1929 (to be published as part of the nine-volume critical edition Essays und Publizistik) and editing a volume of Mann’s novel Mutter Marie for the edition Studienausgabe in Einzelbänden. Among other activities, she is President of the Heinrich Mann-Gesellschaft and Vice-President of the Frank Wedekind-Gesellschaft.
