Individual start page
Despite the common layout of the university pages, a unique design for your start page might be desirable. What possibilities are available to create such an individual design?
If you would like to put more than one picture on your start page, working with the image-scroller is recommended. With this tool you can also link pictures to posts.

Layout tables might be an option for designing an individual page although we cannot recommend to work with them. Especially smartphones or braille users will encounter difficulties with the reproduction of such tables.
Creating a page differs quite a lot from designing a poster and from the view that your operating surfaces convey to you. Try to think independently of such structures during the page creation process.
For illustrative purposes, deactivate style and pictures in your browser and have a look at the results.
You can also pretend that you are using a smartphone or a tablet by simulating other display sizes:
Press Strg + Shift + M
Navigation menus are the most common way to structure your pages. Try to avoid complexity by keeping the labelling of menu items short and concise.
Users are not keen on delving into pages with innumerous branches. Therefore a search function should be offered on every page (There are several widgets available that can be integrated into the right-hand column or into the central column by using a shortcode).
Inserting data tables would be an appropriate option if original data material (e.g. from chart calculation programs) might be presented on the page.
Tabular data might be prepared in Excel and afterwards be imported by using the plugin Tablepress (to be found on the left-hand side of the WordPress editor).
The data table can then be integrated at any postion on the page by using the following shortcode: [table “nrdertabelle” not found /]
A separate blog will be created for each language that might be needed.
An English interface is available in the training blog.
The default setting displays the language variant “English” as a link on the right-hand top of each page. This can be changed manually by entering an alternative language for your page.
If a page has already been translated you can enter the respective web address into the field Language variants which can be found below the text editor screen.
The link to the language variant on the right-hand top of the page will then lead to the translated version of the respective page.
Providing download files
CMS for public web pages (such as WordPress or OpenText) might not necessarily be the best platform for providing downloads…
Download solutions at JGU: Which software shall I use?
- JGU-Reader: This might be the appropriate platform for all files connected with teaching courses (e.g. scripts, learning materials). The circle of users will be defined automatically by Jogustine.
- ILIAS: Suitable for E-Learning content (e.g. electronic exams). The circle of users has to be defined manually by the administrator (from the pool of all ZDV-accounts).
- Sharepoint-Teamweb: This platform offers document libraries and intranet data. The circle of users has to be defined by the administrator (from the pool of all ZDV-accounts).
- WordPress-Downloadcenter: The circle of users should not be constrained. Any directories can be displayed within the university´s Virtual Host.
- Within WordPress: The circle of users cannot be constrained.
Restricting publicity: authentication options
Sometimes it can be necessary to restrict the access to some pages to a defined group of users (for sharing documents and appointments, Sharepoint Teamweb might be the better option). For reading and commenting purposes only, the use of WordpPress should be sufficient.
You might want to capture data by using forms. These data need to be entered into a database table. They might also be send via e-mail. Some personal data can be completed within a form if users apply to it. This is to be done in combination with JGU-Auth.

If data have been structured and captured once it is probably not necessary to enter them again. By using interfaces such as for example JGU-XSL you might define data ranges relevant to your website.
