Concept of Qualification
The idea of the integrated research training group is to provide the Ph.D. candidates with profound knowledge of the CRC's scientific issues, which reach from traditional natural sciences to biomedical life sciences. This bears in mind to give each student a sound base for one's move from Ph.D. studies into e.g. the pharmaceutical industry research. Core activities are therefore lecture series, tutorials, students seminars and summer schools.
An essential part of the training group's constitution is the co-supervision of Ph.D. candidates by one natural scientist and one medical scientist. This will further foster a common understanding between chemistry and medical science in terms of technical terms and solution approaches.
The integrated research training group can profit from the well established training structures at the Johannes Gutenberg University, as e.g. the Graduate School of Excellence MAINZ, the Max Planck Graduate Center MPGC and the Mainz Research School of Translational Biomedicine TRANSMED.
There are four major aspects for an optimized development perspective of the participating Ph.D. candidates:
- Facilitation of scientific self-reliance and independence. It is e.g. in their responsibility to organize student seminars and summer schools. In addition they can apply for scientific assistants to aid them in their lab work (HIWI, 2 months).
- Collaboration of Ph.D. candidates and students of natural and medical sciences (co-supervision and joint seminars, summer schools). This is meant to not only improve the professional qualification of Ph.D. candidates, but also to give them additional key skills for their further career. As the collaboration and interchange between the different parts of the CRC are substantial for the scientific success of the CRC in total, the integrated research training group plays a key role for these factors on the Ph.D. candidates level.
- Internationalization of training. The Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to conduct parts of their research in an renowned research group abroad. During and beyond this time, an international supervisor acts as a contact person. The support by the CRC 1066 covers organizational as well as financial issues.
- The introduction and education of young academics for the promotion of a scientific career. As a main aspect, equal opportunities are to be fostered.
Membership
Applications to the integrated research training school must be submitted to the CRC-speaker. The board of speakers will decide on the application at regular meetings. The application must contain a motivation letter, a CV and examination performance certificates. In addition a suggestion for the Co-supervisor is recommended, who should be complementary (natural or medical sciences) to your primary supervisor.
